A special mention must go to our very own Nathan Douglas, who as part of a team of volunteer lifesavers, were justifiably recognised in the Best of Broad Street awards this week. Nathan was part of the team that picked up the Best Volunteer Award at an awards ceremony, designed to recognise efforts in the Birmingham community.
Nathan regularly gives up his free time on evenings and weekends as an Ambulance Crew Volunteer for the Red Cross. Working closely with regular paramedics of the West Midlands Ambulance Service and the police, The Red Cross address 999 calls all over Birmingham city centre particularly at the weekends when regular services are often stretched.
Dealing with all sorts of call-outs ranging from minor injuries to intoxication, The Red Cross members provide vital assistance to people requiring attention whilst allowing regular ambulance crews to respond to more life-threatening conditions.
